2017,like other years came with it’s flesh and bones. Whichever one you got in your soup, we thank the supreme being we are still breathing. 2017 would be remembered by Nigerians for quite a number of reasons, some of which are, we actually qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the third consecutive time and this time we left the star studded Algerian side behind chasing dust while we went for the gold that group had to offer. We also won the famous Jollof battle. LOL. Shey we won before the battle started bah?
Our music industry witnessed some very golden moments in the year of our Lord 2017. Beefs, hits, albums dropped and the competition became stiffer. The undisputed stars of the show could possibly be none other than Wizkid and Davido. These guys literally explain the Messi and Ronaldo rivalry though in a very disparate tin. 2017 was their year. The rest had to settle for Bronze. The question everyone is asking is ” Between Davido and Wizkid, who had a better year? “. Let’s analyse this together. Shall we? Leggo.
DAVIDO: The DMW boss, stepped into 2017 with no mercy. He opted for the casock as opposed the ripped jeans and shirts others chose as he became the priest in the game and he made sure he blessed us great music and anointed us with his holy water. OBO, after the formation of his label after pulling out of the HKN gang singned Mayorkun and together they released the hit track “Prayer”. Davido made some calls and Tekno picked, after a short while the two shiny stars were in the same studio at the same time. I honestly don’t know how bright that place was. “If” was born, and if I tell you say we no craze for this jam, I lie. This song literally became the national anthem. We were still in the buzz and heat of “If”, OBO went ahead to release “Fall”. Baba, blessings fell on us. That song got us clapping and just when we thought it was over, Cristiano Ronaldo, the 5 times Balon D’or winner and Real Madrid star followed him on Instagram. It’s not just following oo, Ronaldo has over a hundred million followers and he follows not up to 10 people, but he did Davido. Well played Davido, no wonder your guys call you “omo nitendo”.
A lil while, in the comfort of our homes and beds Davido decided to disturb the nation when he released his Dj Mustard produced hit “Pere” featuring Young Thug and the duo of Rae Shraemmud. That song was a hit. Some few months later, Davido got caught up in a major controversy. Some of his friends died in mysterious ways notably Tagbo. Davido nevertheless made it clear that he had nothing to do with the death’s and he is ready to answer in court. Few weeks later he released the song of the moment “FIA” produced by Fresh. With a crative blend of the famous Small Doctor’s funny hook “if you no get money hide your face”, and Runtowns “Mad over you”, Davido gave us what is arguably one of the biggest hits in 2017. Without Mercy, the son of mercy released “Like That”. Haba?
It will only be fair to say Davido came in 2017 with intentions, plans and objectives and we must say he has done justice to his resolutions and even much more than he might have imagined. One hell of a star. He can not possibly forget 2017 as well as we can’t.
If I fall my Prayer is to give you one Pere cos’ I wont put my hand for Fire (Fia) like that. Thank you David!!! The man after our own hearts. LOL
WIZKID: Starboy dey here so!!! The star of the show, the shining one. When wizkid coughs, others shall catch cough except if you are a mutant. Wizkid has made it clear to us all since 2011 that he is not here to pull some Kevin Hart and Bovi stunts on us here. He is here for business, no jokes. 2017 is surely the year of the star boy. No African musician can claim to be as close to Wizkid as Wizkid himself is close to himself in terms of Awards recieved and foreign collaborations. He doesn’t just feature those top American artists, they feature him. Most notable thing Wizkid has done personally is the release of his third major studio album Sounds From The Other Side (SFTOS). That album was mad, it had songs like Come Closer featuring Drake, Naughty Ride featuring Major Lazer, African Bad Girl featuring Chris Brown, One for me featuring Ty Dollar $ign, Gbese featuring Trey Songs and many other hits including Daddy Yo. The star studded album is definitely a dream album for most African acts. But Wizzy done did it and also with ease! You dig? As stated earlier Wizkid won plethora of awards in 2017, and that is a reward for a job well done.
His songs this year have a little twist to them and that makes it better for most of us. I personally love “Picture perfect” more than any other song he has released this year. Baba Nla did not released plenty singles but he was careful enough not to fail us so he released Manya. We don’t know why he chose that title though, but could it be that he has a girl from the Taroh tribe in Plateau State?? LMAO. I’m just kidding.
All round Wizkid has had a great year, one which the MOBO International Act winner can not possibly forget ceteris paribus. Star boy made us proud and there is no denying.
So, the question still remains unanswered, who has had a better year??? To answer this question based on just one criteria will do no justice. Let’s employ the divide and rule tactics. First let’s talk about awards. In 2017 Wizkid won the MOBO’ International Act winner beating legends like Jay Z to it (close that mouth joh. It is that real menh, better accept it), AFRIMA, Nigerian Entertainment Awards, Ghana music awards e.t.c.
Davido on the other hand bagged the MOBO Best African Act amongst others. See the picture below.

In all honesty, based on awards Wizkid has had a greater and better 2017 while in terms of hit songs Davido reigned supreme. It’s all fair and square. While millions argue and fight over who is better, the obvious truth is we are blessed having these two rare gems all at a time and active in the business. Just like Kendrick Lamar and J Cole, Nadal and Federar and Messi and Ronaldo, the rivalry continues but don’t cheat yourself treat yourself with what they have to offer. Keep the PICTURE PERFECT fam I’ll see you GOBE!!!
